Planned or Unplanned?

May 23, 2006

Well, prwdot.org is down as of 9:28 a.m. EDT. I'm marking this as planned and unplanned… because it could possibly be the planned maintenance that Site5 had talked about, or it could be unplanned…. who knows. I'll see what Site5 has to say.

*Update at 12:37pm*

It looks like this was unplanned. The server came back up at around 10:20 a.m. and then went back down again for unknown reasons at around 12:07 p.m. Site5 is currently looking into the issue.

Upcoming Planned Outage

May 18, 2006

Looks like Site5 is poised to make a very welcome enhancement to their service offerings. Consequently, there will be a planned outage at some point next week. I'll let you know when I have more definite information, but for now, here's the email I received from Site5:

Dear Peter Wood,

As part of our ongoing effort to provide a high performance hosting experience, we will be redistributing a large number of web hosting accounts (along with their MultiSite sub-accounts) to a fleet of new servers. More specifically, the number of accounts on many of our MultiSite hosting servers will be cut in half.

As you might expect, this redistribution will result in highly increased website performance and speed. In addition, we have several new Level III Systems Administrators on staff who are working to ensure that our servers are running at peak performance 24 hours a day.

Your account "prwdot.org" is hosted on a server which will have its accounts split (moiras.multisite). This does not necessarily mean that your account will be moved to a new server, since half of the accounts on each system will remain where they are.

It will take approximately three days to complete the redistributions for all servers (three days total, not three days per server). We will begin the process mid-to-late next week. Further information with a detailed schedule and list of accounts being moved will be sent out early next week.

We will be taking every precaution to ensure that downtime from these migrations is minimized, however accounts being moved can expect to experience a minor outage as a result of the move. We will provide more details on this early next week.

I would like to thank you for your continued patronage. As always, we are doing everything in our power to ensure that your Site5 hosting experience exceeds your expectations.

If you have any questions regarding this email, please send them to customer.service@site5.com (you can do so by replying to this email).

Best Regards,

Morning Reboot

May 10, 2006

This morning at approximately 8:02 a.m. EDT, the server hosting prwdot.org was rebooted. I don't know at the moment why it was rebooted, but Site5 is looking at the issue. It looks like the server came back up at 8:38 a.m. EDT. I apologize for any inconvenience.

Web Access Still Blocked

May 4, 2006

As of 7:30 p.m. EDT, web access to prwdot.org is still being blocked. I have not heard anything from Site5 in several hours. Apparently it was a PHP script that was causing the increased MySQL utilization, but they haven't been able to tell me specifically which one. Since most of the content on prwdot.org uses PHP, it could be just about anything.

I really hope that we can get this resolved soon. I apologize to anyone who is unable to access a website hosted at prwdot.org.

Update – The website should be totally unblocked now. Apparently some applications on the server were taking up too many resources. I have done some work to optimize things, and hopefully this will alleviate any problems.

Web Access Disabled

May 4, 2006

Well, here's a new one. Apparently as of 2:21 p.m. EDT, Site5 has disabled web access to all prwdot.org servers due to problems with MySQL utilization. This is the first I've heard of such problems, so I'll be working with Site5 to determine the nature of the MySQL issues and what can be done about it.

Apologies for the outage, and I'll keep you posted.

Afternoon outage

May 4, 2006

The server hosting prwdot.org experienced an unplanned outage from approximately 1:30 p.m. EDT to 1:55 p.m. EDT this afternoon. It appears that the server was rebooted for some reason. I have dispatched a support ticket to Site5, but have not heard anything back from them. At the moment, the server appears to be back up and running.

Morning outage

May 4, 2006

This morning at approximately 8:43 a.m. EDT, the server hosting prwdot.org suffered an unplanned outage. Site5 has responded that they are in the process of rebooting the machine.

As of approximately 9:40 a.m., it looks like the machine is mostly back up, but there are still some issues with database connectivity.

Monday Evening Outage

May 2, 2006

On Monday evening at approximately 6:20 p.m. EDT, prwdot.org suffered an unplanned outage. The site was back up by 6:40 p.m., and full functionality was restored by approximately 7:00 p.m. The cause of the outage was apparently another user on the machine running a program that consumed an inordinate amount of system resources. This user's account was suspended temporarily, and Site5 worked with the user to correct their application. There was another brief outage at around 9 p.m. EDT when the user restarted their program, but this was quickly corrected.

In addition to the unplanned outage on Site5's part, WordPress.com had an outage last night as well, so I was unable to post here on the prwdot.org site status blog.

Apologies for the outages of last evening!
