Sooner rather than later

September 27, 2006

Looks like things are going to be fixed sooner rather than later…

Todd Mitchell
Chief Operating Officer

This machine has fallen offline for the second time today. Rather than waiting for the maintenance tonight, I’m having the machine swapped into a new chassis right now.

ETA is approx. 25 minutes.

Todd

Here’s to hoping that this fixes the problem.

Update at 3:23 p.m.

Well, they’re officially 10 minutes past their ETA. This is unfortunate, as ETAs are usually conservative estimates. So if it’s taking 10 minutes longer than their conservative estimate, either something with a higher priority came up, or they are having even more problems than they anticipated.

Update at 3:56 p.m.

Ok, it’s been about an hour. I guess 25 minutes was more approximate than they thought. Great. Just great.

Site5 Maintenance News

September 27, 2006

If you’ll direct your attention to the right side nav bar, you’ll notice that I have added a widget that displays the latest Site5 maintenance notices. This pulls from an RSS feed generated by their forum, so every time they post a new announcement, it should automatically update in the sidebar on this site. I hope that this will bring some more timely news and information in the occasions where I am unable to post my own updates right away.

Also, I’ve added a link to our Statistics page on SiteUptime. This will show you the uptime for the prwdot.org web server for the past few months. Note that in September it’s particularly bad. I apologize for this, but there is nothing I can do about it (well, except for switching web hosts, which I am always considering as an option).

MySQL Upgrade

September 27, 2006

Just got a notice from Site5 that MySQL is going to be upgraded on all servers. You can read the notice [on the Site5 forum](http://forums.site5.com/showthread.php?p=79337#post79337).

Here are the basics:

Site5 Internet Solutions, Inc. maintenance notification [Planned]:

Date: 10/03/2006 – 10/08/2006
Start time: 22:00 ET / GMT -5
Estimated end time: 06:00 ET / GMT -5

Services/Equipment: Fleet wide
Type of work: Software upgrade
Purpose of work: Upgrade to MySQL 5.0.x

The total downtime per server is supposed to be 15-25 minutes at any point during the above mentioned window, so if you attempt to access prwdot.org during that time, you may experience problems.

Chassis Swap

September 27, 2006

It looks like Site5 is finally taking some serious action. They are going to be swapping out the chassis on the server that prwdot.org is hosting on. See here for the discussion thread in the Site5 forums.

Date: 09/27/2006
Start time: 22:00 ET / GMT -5
Estimated end time: 06:00 ET / GMT -5

Believe it or not…

September 27, 2006

…we have an outage for the fourth day in a row!

We have been down since approximately 5 a.m. EDT. I dispatched a ticket to Site5 at 7:30 a.m., but have not heard back from them yet.

The site was back up as of 9:30 a.m.
